Hola from sunny Granada, where the vibes were international, and the skin… was reconstructed.
Hosted at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Granada, the three‑day UGRSKINTECH Summer School featured high‑calibre lectures and hands‑on workshops in Histology, Tissue Engineering, and Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMPs) and learning how to suture like a pro.
Science, but make it extra
Between Keynotes on skin substitutes and ATMP development, featuring experts such as Vito Antonio Baldassarro, Miguel Alaminos, and Gloria Carmona, we dove into hands-on labs covering:
- skin cell culture,
- hydrogel generation,
- histological assessment
- biomechanical and optical testing
- Site visit inside GMP facilities, followed by discussions on regulatory and translational challenges for skin ATMPs
We were welcomed by the fabulous and experienced team at the University of Granada’s Tissue Engineering Group — one of the few labs in Europe that grafts reconstructed skin onto actual patients.
A Mini United Nations (with tapas)
Participants came from all corners of Europe: Spain, Croatia, Germany, Switzerland, Latvia, the Netherlands, Norway. Atmosphere was multicultural, friendly, and buzzing with bright ideas.
Social side?
Flamenco in a palace, Sunset walk through the Albayzín and Sacromonte, Tapas and views at Carmen de la Victoria: The social programme was as rich and exciting as the scientific one
A big THANK YOU to organizers Jesús Chato Astrain and Miguel Alaminos and their team, with special thanks to Gloria Carmona and her team for their support!
A world class Summer School that perfectly balanced rigorous scientific training, practical ATMP focused workshops, and a rich social and cultural programme. Hosted by a leading lab in reconstructed skin production and transplantation, it delivered on high expertise, a cosmopolitan environment, and memorable evenings.
